Meet the people: John Leonardo Ruitenbeek

He is one of the most controversial types I have ever met. John Leonardo Ruitenbeek. He is both very kind and polite and yet one of the most ratchet people I know. He could easily be from the Mediterranean since he has a very warm and fiery character but he is Dutch with Indonesian and English roots. Let me introduce you to John!

The first time I met John, I was kind of on the skeptical side. I am usually very skeptical when it comes to meeting male models because in my experience a lot of them don’t really have an interesting personality to them. Maybe it’s just the people I’ve met though! When he comes walking in on set with his gorgeous girlfriend, Nikki Wilsterman, he has a big bruise right under his eye. A bike accident he tells me. Biking/Motorcross is his hobby and something he does in every free minute he has. They are both very relaxed and down to earth. I ask them how they have met and they both turn a bit red. ”She added me on Facebook and I thought she was very beautiful” John starts. ”Later on she posted something funny on her Facebook and I saw it in my timeline, I thought she was one of the funniest and prettiest girls I ever saw and asked her out on a date” he goes on. I think it’s all very cute and they look very good together. Nikki keeps the wild and free John on the serious side. I think they compliment each other and bring the best out of each other.

John’s modeling career
John is 25 years old and currently lives in Amsterdam. You might know him from a Dutch TV show in search of a model. I think he either won or came in second but I’m not sure. He has been a model for around 10 years and since a year and a half he has his own modeling company called JR Modelmanagement.  As a model John has traveled to Milan, New York, Paris and London. He was scouted in a small Dutch city called: Den Bosch and after working on his portfolio for a year, he moved to Milan. The stories he tells me about Milan are crazy. The perks of being a model, he says, are that you are on your own a lot and you learn a lot about yourself in a very short time. ”You have to become independent very fast in order to maintain yourself” he adds.

The downside? ”The modeling industry is a very glamorous and cool industry. You get to travel the world and meet a lot of interesting people. The downside of that is that it’s a very hard industry to get into. You get rejected a lot and need a thick skin to survive. It can be hard to find your way. However I focus on all the gorgeous cities I have been to, the cultures I got to explore and the amazing people I got to meet along the way” John explains.

JR Modelmanagement

JR Modelmangement is a product of John working together with Nikki. Because I find Nikki so inspiring, I wanted to write a bit about her too. Nikki is an international sportswomen. Her dedication is amazing and very inspiring. She trains every day to become the very best. What I love about Nikk is that I can reach her any minute of the day which speaks of her dedication to her work and she doesn’t take no for an answer. If Nikkie wants something, she goes for it and she is very down to earth. I love women who truly stand their ground just like Nikki does.

Together with Nikki, John started JR Modelmanagement. JR Modelmanagement focusses on guiding models to achieve their goals, getting them a solid portfolio and eventually paid jobs. This is a bit harder in The Netherlands because a lot of brands do not pay for models but just give them free clothes. ”Because of my experience, I started JR Modelmanagement. I love scouting new faces and turning them into a great model. Modeling is not just about having a pretty face. You need to work very hard for it. Learn how to walk proper, pose proper and how to maintain yourself in this industry. Because I’m an experienced model, I can teach others how to become an international model. Naturally the models need to work for their career themselves too but with my training and guidance I can help them become an international model.” John explains.

Without Nikki, JR Modelmanagement would not be the same. ”Working with Nikki is a challenge because she is super ambitious and she has to work-out everyday for her sporting career. Her ambitious mindset has brought us so much already. Without Nikkie, we wouldn’t be where we are now” John says. Nikki is more the business side while John guides the models. However Nikki is also very creative. She recently did the styling of one of the shoots and it looked great!

”Our goal is to get the maximum out of a career of the models. For some this means being in the top of the industry in The Netherlands and for others this means having in international career. This is different per model and what they want to achieve. Most models that sign with JR Modelmanagement, have no experience, no portfolio or whatsoever.. It is our job to get them a killer portfolio and  manage them. Another important aspect is getting them ”in the picture” so to speak. Making sure the right brands want to work with them and know who they are.” John adds.

Don’t take no for an answer
If there is one thing I have learned from John and Nikki it is that you just can’t take no for an answer. If you want something, you need to go for it. No matter what other people might tell you. John gives me some great advice:”It might sound a bit cliche but you need to believe in yourself. Hard work pays off. Don’t let anyone ever tell you that you can’t do something. Use that as a motivation to do better, to work harder.”

Hi guys! My name is Suzan Alberts and I live in Rotterdam! As a young girl my parents moved to Curacao and obviously I went with them. There my passion for the unknown started growing. I love exploring new places, finding the hidden paths on the side of the road and experience new things. When I grew up my goal became to work in the film-industry in Los Angeles, like a lot of people! I love to dream away in movies and picture myself working at beautiful filmsets. That´s why I decided to start with my Media and Entertainment Studies in my hometown! That resulted in an amazing internship in Los Angeles at Dick Clark Productions, a company known for The Golden Globes, Billboard Awards & various other award shows such as the ACMA's and The Streamy Awards. I had the time of my life and after I came back in The Netherlands, I started to develop my creative skills more and more. After I graduated, I started working as an online marketeer for Dutch Basics. I took photos for social-media, wrote blogs and updated all their social-media pages everyday. That is where my passion for fashion and writing started to grow. After that I started working as a Marketing and PR Manager at My Brand Amsterdam, a Dutch Clothing label. Now I own my own business called Social For Business and want to conquer the world with social media and video! Because I missed writing and photography too much, I started my own blog to show you my view on this world!
