A couple of weeks ago I did another shoot at my favorite location. This time with models Milo Birahij, Lenny Kruider and Matthys van Kuyvenhoven, who was also the make-up artist. I was the photographer and stylist for this shoot. We were very fortunate with the backdrop because the red in the backdrop matches the colour of the clothes. Also the green car looks great in contrast to the other colours. This shoot was the first shoot I did at this location but I have been going there for two clients too. Everytime the location is kind of different!
I wanted to portray young, forbidden love with this picture. This wasn’t the main intention of the shoot though! I usually just see what feels right at the location. Because people are always surprised by the way I work, I want to share a bit more about it.
What I usually do is: approach the models. I ask them via Instagram or Whatsapp if they want to do a photoshoot with me. I only had a rejection once and that was not via Instagram but during an event. I think Instagram is a great way to meet new models and to find awesome people to shoot with. After I have sent them a message we agree on the moodboard and I search for a location. In this case things went a little differently because I already knew everyone and we had already agreed on a photoshoot. My former intern told me about the shooting location and she helped me pick out the styling.
Usually I do the styling myself and use clothes from my own closet. This time, because my former intern was a stylist, we borrowed some clothes from Evana Kuik, desingner at Evan Menswear. She also owns Inconcept Live Magazine in Rotterdam with her parents. Evan Menswear has a great selection of cool male clothes that I love. Inconcept sells vintage clothes but then a little bit more high end. They usually get them from designers after fashion shows. If you are ever in The Netherlands you should check them out!!
So what we do next is pick a time and place and we just pretty much see what happens on location. I usually don’t really want to plan tooooo much because I feel like my work is the best when it’s natural and on location. However I do think some planning is necessary. I do that with styling and the right location. Also, to give it something extra it is nice to bring some props!
